Host Drum for the Midnight Sun Intertribal Powwow
History Of Soaring Eagle Drum............. During the winter of 2007 several members of the Walking Hawk Drum began discussing the need for a bigger drum as the group seemed to be growing in number. There was also a stated desire to have any new drum expand it's vision to embrace Alaskan Native songs and culture out of respect to that any drum located in the Alaskan interior needs to recognize and include Alaskan Native culture and people. In addition There was a desire to make the new drum available to the Fairbanks community for ceremonies, events, and gatherings wherever people requested it. In mid-winter A.J. Dick and Bob Maguire began the construction of the new drum by building a bending form and laminating thin plywood onto the form. Later came the addition of cedar on the outside of the inside frame by Bob Maguire and Jormah Pope. Eagle feathers were donated by Samuel Shore and were attached on the inside of the drum at the four sacred directional points. On July 2007 a blessing ceremony was conducted at Alaskaland at which time the drum was blessed with smudging and prayers. Special songs were sung into the new drum and the buffalo hide covers were laced onto the drum frame by A.J., Jormah, Neil, Angel, and link. The new drums name " Soaring Eagle " stems directly from a powerful dream vision by one of the drum circle. In this vision the drum sat in a small valley with an Eagle soaring high above it. There were drummers of all ages and races seated around it and there were four lines of young people streaming over the rolling hills coming to the new drum from the four sacred directions. The drum was already named Soaring Eagle in the vision. The new drum was brought out to the public in August 2007 in Salcha at the dust of the earth gathering. This is the story of Soaring Eagle, A new intertribal drum in interior Alaska. A drum available to all people who are seeking their spiritual path and desiring to walk the good Red Road.
